When Longtan was still a layman, he regularly offered ten cakes to Tianhuang. Whenever Tianhuang finished eating, he would leave one cake and give it back to him, saying, "I bestow this upon you to shade your sons and grandsons." The Master suddenly wondered at this and asked, "The cake was brought by me; why do you turn around and say you bestow it upon me?" Tianhuang said, "It was brought by you; what fault is there in returning it to you?" The Master was enlightened because of this and subsequently left home [to become a monk].
