Mañjuśrī asked Wuzhuo, "How is the Dharma maintained in the south?"
Wuzhuo said, "In the age of the degenerate Dharma, monks rarely observe the precepts."
He asked, "How large is the assembly?"
Wuzhuo said, "Perhaps three hundred or five hundred."
Wuzhuo then asked, "How is the Dharma maintained here?"
Mañjuśrī said, "Ordinary mortals and sages dwell together; dragons and snakes are intermingled."
He asked, "How large is the assembly?"
Mañjuśrī said, "Three three in front, three three behind."
When evening came, Wuzhuo requested lodging. Mañjuśrī said, "Virtuous One, you still have attachment in mind."
"I have no attachment."
He said, "Have you ever received the precepts?"
He said, "I received the precepts long ago."
He said, "Since you have no attachment, what use is receiving precepts?"
Wuzhuo had no reply.
A youth escorted him out. When they reached the gate, Wuzhuo asked, "Just now the Great Sage said, 'Three three in front, three three behind.' How many is that?"
The youth called out, "Virtuous One!"
Wuzhuo turned his head. The youth said, "How many is that?"
He also asked, "What is the name of this monastery on the plaque?"
The youth pointed behind a vajra-warrior. Wuzhuo turned his head, and the conjured monastery disappeared.
