As for the Chan master: primordial and true in one single breath, firm in the three emptinesses; walking and staying with ease, speaking and silent in tranquil peace. Carrying the diamond seal of wisdom, transmitting the mind-lamp of all buddhas, he illuminates the dark road of accumulated kalpas and kindles the dark room of multiple lifetimes; he cuts off all currents across the four seas and understands the myriad dharmas in a single phrase. Pointing directly to the human mind: seeing into one's nature is buddhahood! Roaring like a lion, he broadly proclaims the mysterious sound; thundering the heavenly thunder of Nāgārjuna, he directly clarifies the wondrous purpose. All are preordained transmissions of the Buddha's prophecy. One must know that supreme causes were planted in past lives; were it not for thoroughly piercing the heavenly workings, how could one pacify dhyāna and quiet contemplation, recognize the mind and reach the source, secretly accord with all conditions, realize the nature of non-arising, and suddenly transcend both phenomenon and principle? He shall surely continue the flame and transmit the lamp, making the three realms radiant and keeping the Buddha-sun eternally bright.
