As for the Dharma master: ascending the lion throne, he broadly unfurls the wondrous meaning and discusses the principle of the two kinds of emptiness; the principle accords with the perfect and constant. He opens the gates of the sudden and gradual, discriminates the wisdom of the noble and the ordinary, dispenses medicines according to the circumstance, measures the capacity of the vessel for duty, knows the ripe and knows the root, and sifts the heterodox from the orthodox. Radiant are subject and object; distinct and lucid are host and guest. Cause and effect are not obscured in the human realm; the transformation of the Way is not lost in the heavenly spheres. Striking the great Dharma drum, how could he abandon the bridge and ford? Were he not a superior figure of the four reliances and three virtues, how could he broadly propagate the Great Teaching? Unless one is an attained person, thoroughly gauging the shallow and the deep and fit to be the very person, only then is he called a guide and leader.
