上堂，舉：「雲門大師云：『平地上死人無數，過得荊棘林者是好手。』」乃拈起拂子云：「大眾！若喚作拂子，正是平地上死人；若不喚作拂子，未透得荊棘林在。」擊禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Great Master Yunmen said: 'On level ground there are countless dead people; one who can pass through the bramble thicket is an expert hand.'" Then, holding up his fly-whisk, he said: "Assembly! If you call it a fly-whisk, you are precisely a dead person on level ground; if you do not call it a fly-whisk, you have not yet penetrated the bramble thicket." He struck the Chan seat and descended from the seat.
