1.18

上堂云：「盡令提綱，不通凡聖；放一線道，有箇商量。」遂拈起拄杖云：「即今拄杖竪也，十方世界一時竪。」又橫拄杖云：「即今拄杖橫也，十方世界一時橫。何也？不見道：極小同大，忘絕境界；極大同小，不見邊表。」卓拄杖，下座。

Ascending the hall, he said: "Fully executing the directive admits neither ordinary nor sage; letting down a single thread allows for deliberation." He then held up his staff and said: "Right now the staff stands vertically: the worlds of the ten directions stand vertically all at once." He also held the staff horizontally and said: "Right now the staff lies horizontally: the worlds of the ten directions lie horizontally all at once. Why is this? Have you not heard it said: 'The extremely small is identical to the large; boundaries and realms are forgotten and severed. The extremely large is identical to the small; no outer limits can be seen.'" He struck his staff and descended from the seat.
