上堂，云：「黃蘗有時正路行，或時草裡走。汝等諸人，莫見錐頭利，失却鑿頭方。不見古者道：開不能遮，句賊破家；當斷不斷，返遭其亂。」下座。

Ascending the hall, he said: "Huangbo sometimes walks the main road, and sometimes walks in the grass. All of you, do not see the sharpness of the awl's point and lose the squareness of the chisel's head. Have you not seen what the ancients said? 'Open, one cannot block; a phrase that is a thief breaks up the family. Failing to sever when it is time to sever, one encounters chaos instead.'" He descended from the seat.
