1.88

上堂云：「昨日有一則因緣，擬舉似大眾，却為老僧忘事都大，一時思量不出。」乃沈吟多時云：「忘却也，忘却也。」復云：「教中有一道真言，號聰明王，有人念者，忘即記得。」遂云：「唵阿盧勒繼娑婆訶。」乃拍手大笑云：「記得也，記得也。覓佛不見佛，討祖不見祖，甜瓜徹蒂甜，苦瓠連根苦。」下座。

Ascending the hall, he said: "Yesterday there was a case that I intended to bring up for the assembly, but because this old monk's forgetfulness is so severe, for a moment I could not recall it." He then pondered in silence for a long time and said, "Forgotten! Forgotten!" He spoke again: "In the teachings there is a dhāraṇī called 'Wisdom King.' If someone recites it, whatever was forgotten is remembered." He then said: "oṃ ārolik svāhā." He then clapped his hands, laughed heartily, and said, "Remembered! Remembered! / Searching for Buddha, no Buddha is seen; / Seeking the patriarchs, no patriarch is seen. / The sweet melon is sweet all the way to its stem; / The bitter gourd is bitter down to its roots." He stepped down from the seat.
