2.32

上堂云：「說佛說法拈槌竪拂，白雲萬里；德山入門便棒，臨濟入門便喝，白雲萬里；然後恁麼也不得，不恁麼也不得，恁麼不恁麼總不得也，則白雲萬里。忽有箇出來道：長老！爾恁麼道也，則白雲萬里。者箇說話，喚作矮子看戲，隨人上下，三十年後一場好笑。且道笑箇什麼笑？白雲萬里。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "Speaking of Buddha, speaking of Dharma, picking up the mallet, raising the fly-whisk—white clouds for ten thousand miles. Deshan striking with his staff as soon as one enters the gate, Linji shouting as soon as one enters the gate—white clouds for ten thousand miles. Then, 'being like this' will not do, 'not being like this' will not do, 'both being like this and not being like this' completely will not do—even then, white clouds for ten thousand miles. Suppose someone suddenly comes forth and says, 'Elder, your speaking like this is also white clouds for ten thousand miles.' Such talk is called a dwarf watching a play, following others up and down; thirty years from now, it will be a good laugh. And tell me, what laugh is it laughing? White clouds for ten thousand miles."
