2.45

新鞔法鼓上堂云：「多載頑皮擊不響，新皮纔動震天雷，無滯莫言隨勢去，有聲誰謂不平來。何也？雙眼聽不聞，雙耳覷不見，一條平坦路，是誰沒方便。」

Upon newly skinning the Dharma drum, he ascended the hall and said: / "For many years, stubborn hide made no sound when struck; / The new hide barely stirs, and thunder shakes the sky. / Without obstruction, do not say it merely follows the trend; / When there is sound, who says it does not come from grievance? / Why is this? Both eyes listen and do not hear; both ears gaze and do not see. On a single level, flat road, who is it that lacks expedient means?"
