2.55

上堂，僧問：「不昧當機請師直道。」師云：「揑聚放開。」乃舉：「僧辭趙州，州云：『有佛處不得住。』」師云：「換却爾心肝五臟。『無佛處急走過。』」師云：「雁過留聲。『三千里外逢人不得錯舉。』」師云：「出門便錯。僧云：『恁麼則不去也。』」師云：「種粟却生豆。州云：『摘楊花，摘楊花。』」師云：「不覺日又夜，爭教人少年。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Not obscured by the immediate dynamic, I ask the Master to speak plainly." The Master said, "Squeezed together, opened wide." He then cited: "A monk took leave of Zhaozhou. Zhou said, 'Do not stay where there is a Buddha.'" The Master said, "Replacing your heart, liver, and five viscera." "'Where there is no Buddha, hurry past.'" The Master said, "A wild goose passes, leaving its cry." "'When you meet someone three thousand miles away, do not mention this incorrectly.'" The Master said, "Mistaken the moment you step out the door." "The monk said, 'In that case, I will not go.'" The Master said, "Sowing millet, but harvesting beans." "Zhou said, 'Pick the willow catkins, pick the willow catkins!'" The Master said, "Unawares, another day turns to night; how can one make someone young again?"
