2.67

上堂云：「二十五年坐這曲彔木頭上，舉古舉今則不無，秖是未曾道著第一句。眾中莫有具大慈悲者，試出來道看，也要眾人共知，兼乃平生行脚。有麼有麼？莫道無，忽有箇出來却問：如何是第一句？白雲不免向他道：放麼作麼？」

Ascending the hall, he said, "For twenty-five years I have sat on this curved-back wooden chair. Citing the ancient and citing the present are not lacking, but I have never yet spoken the first phrase. Is there anyone in the assembly possessing great compassion? Try coming forward and speaking it, so that the assembly may all know it, and to fulfill your life's pilgrimage. Is there anyone? Is there anyone? Do not say there is none. If someone suddenly came forward and asked in turn, 'What is the first phrase?' Baiyun could not help but say to him: 'Why let it go?'"
