In the past, Master Yan of Haihui traveled on foot to the summit of Baiyun Peak, where he met a kalyāṇamitra seated upon the lion throne, manifesting the body of a monk, doing nothing to be done, preaching nothing to be preached. At times he grasped the clouds and seized the waves, playing freely at ease; at times he cut through iron and severed nails, so that no interference was possible. From all quarters they converged like spokes at an axle, and the fourfold assembly followed in admiration; unable to fathom his reasons, they were entirely beside themselves. The Master alone gazed intently and smiled, in complete accord with his mind; before much time had passed, he received the transmission. Supported by devas and humans, he moved from Simian to abide at Taiping; as father and son succeeded each other, he came from Taiping to Haihui. Answering questions according to potential and presenting teachings in response to circumstances, without borrowing novel sharpness, he was naturally extraordinary. His disciples compiled his sayings and asked me to write a preface for them, wishing to transmit them to the world. Preface by Zhu Yuanhuo of Wujun on the tenth day of the eleventh month in the second year of Shaosheng [1095].
