3.53

上堂，舉：「僧問趙州：『狗子還有佛性也無？』州云：『無。』僧云：『一切眾生皆有佛性，狗子為什麼却無？』州云：『為伊有業識在。』」師云：「大眾！爾諸人尋常作麼生會？老僧尋常只舉無字便休。爾若透得這一箇字，天下人不柰爾何。爾諸人作麼生透？還有透得徹底麼？有則出來道看。我也不要爾道有，也不要爾道無，也不要爾道不有不無。爾作麼生道？珍重。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou, 'Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?' Zhaozhou said, 'No (wu).' The monk said, 'All sentient beings have Buddha-nature; why does a dog not have it?' Zhaozhou said, 'Because he has karmic consciousness.'" The Master said, "Great assembly! How do you usually understand this? This old monk usually only cites the word 'No' (wu) and stops. If you can penetrate this one word, no one under heaven can do anything to you. How do you penetrate it? Is there anyone who has penetrated to the bottom? If there is, come forward and speak so we can see! I do not want you to say 'yes', nor do I want you to say 'no', nor do I want you to say 'neither yes nor no'. What do you say? Take care."
