When his Dharma brother Shitai arrived, he ascended the hall. A monk asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Iron banners and iron drums." The student asked, "Is there only this, or is there something else?" The Master said, "Look at Caishi Ferry." The student asked, "If a guest suddenly arrives, how do you entertain him?" The Master said, "Dragon liver and phoenix marrow must wait for another time." The student said, "The guest is the master's teacher." The Master said, "Thank you for the offering." He then said, "In the past, my late teacher verse-commented on Linji's three blows of the staff, saying: 'With a single fist he knocked down Yellow Crane Tower; / With a single kick he overturned Parrot Island. / When there is spirit, it adds to the spirit; / Where there is no romance, romance is found.' Great assembly! If you come to Baiyun's gate, everyone must lend a fist!"
