Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What was it like before Dīpaṃkara?" The Master said, "It makes people doubt." The student asked, "What is it like at the very moment of Dīpaṃkara?" The Master said, "Mistaking the fixed star on the steelyard." The student asked, "What is it like after Dīpaṃkara?" The Master said, "A scene of utter embarrassment." He then said, "Every month has its fifteenth day; / Through beginningless eons they have all been counted. / Counting right down to Maitreya's descent to be born, / Inevitably there is sweet and there is bitter. / And tell me, how is it in the end? / The white-foreheaded great tiger of the Southern Mountain / Was originally the fierce tiger of the Western Mountain."
