Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Prince Siddhārtha." The student said, "How was it when he leapt over the city wall?" The Master said, "Naturally the Four Heavenly Kings were there." The student said, "How was it when he reached the snowy mountains?" The Master said, "Reed shoots pierced his knees; a magpie nested on the crown of his head." The student said, "What can be done when this is still not the place for this student to settle his body and life?" The Master shouted and said, "Make prostrations and withdraw!" He then said, "Heaven and earth are a great furnace, / Smelting the strong and the weak. / The Great Way is fundamentally without origin; / Rolling up and opening out depend on the bellows. / The path of ordinary and holy is level; / Let each look to his own strategy."
