1.87

Ascending the hall at the start of the summer retreat, a monk asked, "What is Baiyun's environment?" The Master said, "Seven layers of mountains lock in the babbling water." The student asked, "Who is the person within the environment?" The Master said, "Thousands come, tens of thousands go." The student asked, "Having received the Master's instruction regarding person and environment, what about the transcendent vehicle of the lineage?" The Master said, "A flushed face is not as good as straight speech." He then said: "Dwelling this summer at Baiyun, / Chan practitioners happen to gather. / Throughout the ninety days of the three months, / Superior and inferior rely on each other. / With gruel, rice, tea, and soup, / Endure whatever comes, fine or coarse. / As you wish, study the scriptures; / Moving naturally, practice samādhi. / We are all sons who have left home— / Open wide your bellies!"
