Ascending the hall, he said: "A lifetime's teachings, five thousand forty-eight fascicles, emptiness and existence, sudden and gradual—how could this not be existence? Yongjia said, 'There is also no person, nor any Buddha; the great chiliocosm's sandy worlds are foam on the sea; all sages and worthies are like flashes of lightning.' How could this not be non-existence? Assembly! If you say it is existence, you contradict Yongjia; if you say it is non-existence, you also contradict old Śākyamuni. How can this be weighed just right? If you know the point of landing, in the morning you see Śākyamuni, and in the evening you visit Maitreya. If it is not yet clear, Baiyun will point it out for you: Saying non-existence is not non-existence; saying existence is not existence. Facing east, look at West Aparagodānīya; facing south, behold the Northern Dipper."
