Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "The whole lifetime of teachings is a phonetic fanqie; I wonder, what word does it spell?" The Master said, "Prajñā." The student asked, "I only asked for one word; why did you answer with so many?" The Master said, "Seven words, eight words." The student said, "You are indeed accustomed to taking advantage of the situation." The Master said, "Tea and rice for so long—it turns out someone actually knows the flavour." He then said, "The seal of the ancestral master's mind: where the good news is, there is no news; where there is no news, the ancient seal script is clear. Held up, the great thousand worlds tremble; set down, ordinary and sacred share the same source. At times it stamps everyone right on the face, yet you willingly submit to defeat and refuse to take responsibility. This implicates Baiyun in suffering an injustice! Tell me, where does the fault lie?"
