Ascending the hall, he cited: "Xuefeng asked Deshan, 'With what Dharma did the ancient sages instruct people?' Deshan said, 'My lineage has no words or phrases, nor does it have a single Dharma to give to people.' From this Xuefeng had an awakening. Later, a monk asked Xuefeng, 'When the Upādhyāya saw Deshan, what did you obtain that made you cease?' Xuefeng said, 'I went empty-handed and returned empty-handed.' Baiyun today speaks to those who have not yet penetrated through: two people came from the Eastern Capital. I asked them, 'Where did you come from?' They said, 'From Suzhou.' Then I asked them, 'How are things in Suzhou?' They said, 'Everything is normal.' Even so, they could not deceive Baiyun. Why so? Merely because their dialects were different. In the end, how is it? Water caltrops from Suzhou, lotus roots from Shaobo."
