Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Receiving the Master's words: 'A patch of idle land before the mountain—just like before Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja.' I wonder: who is the master?" The Master said, "Ask the one who writes deeds and contracts." The student said, "Why does the Upādhyāya hire someone else to answer?" The Master said, "Only because you had someone else ask." The student said, "I come out even with the Upādhyāya." The Master said, "Far from it!" He then said, "The five eyes cannot view its countenance; the two hearings are cut off from listening to its echo. Those with merit are punished; those without merit are rewarded. Pick up Mount Sumeru—weighed out, it is two ounces. If suddenly someone says, 'A kalyāṇamitra of a region—why weigh people and things with such a large steelyard?'" He himself said, "The government does not admit a needle; privately, carriages and horses pass through."
