觀和尚見新到來，觀作麵引次示之，其僧便去，觀晚間問第一座：「今日新到在什麼處？」第一座云：「當時去也。」觀云：「是即是，只得一橛。」師拈云：「老觀大似失錢遭罪。」

Upādhyāya Guan saw a newcomer arriving; Guan was making dough strips and showed them to him. The monk then left. In the evening, Guan asked the head monk: 'Where is today's newcomer?' The head monk said: 'He left at once.' Guan said: 'He is right, but he has only gotten one piece of wood.' The Master commented: "Old Guan was much like losing money and suffering punishment."
