1.44

舉：「黃檗有六人新到，五人作禮，其中一人提起坐具作一圓相，檗云：『我聞有一獵犬甚惡。』僧云：『尋云羊聲來。』檗云：『𦏰羊無聲到汝尋。』僧云：『尋𦏰羊跡來。』檗云：『𦏰羊無跡到汝尋。』僧云：『尋𦏰羊蹤來。』檗云：『𦏰羊無蹤到汝尋。』僧云：『恁麼則死𦏰羊也。』黃檗便休。到來日上堂云：『獵犬在甚處？』僧便出來，檗云：『昨日公案未了，老僧休去，爾作麼生？』僧無語，檗云：『將謂是本分衲子，元來是義學沙門。』以拄杖打出。」師云：「只如聲響蹤跡既無，獵犬向甚處尋逐？莫是絕聲響蹤跡見黃檗麼？諸禪德，要明陷虎之機，也須是本分衲子。」

[The Master] cited: "At Huangbo's place, six newcomers arrived. Five of them made bows, while one among them lifted up his sitting mat and made a circle. Huangbo said, 'I hear there is a hunting dog that is very vicious.' The monk said, 'It has come tracking the sound of an antelope.' Huangbo said, 'An antelope makes no sound for you to track.' The monk said, 'It has come tracking the footprints of an antelope.' Huangbo said, 'An antelope leaves no footprints for you to track.' The monk said, 'It has come tracking the trail of an antelope.' Huangbo said, 'An antelope leaves no trail for you to track.' The monk said, 'If so, then it is a dead antelope.' Huangbo then desisted. When the next day came, he ascended the hall and said, 'Where is the hunting dog?' The monk then stepped forward. Huangbo said, 'Yesterday's public case was not finished. When this old monk desisted, what about you?' The monk was speechless. Huangbo said, 'I thought you were a patch-robed monk of the fundamental allotment; turns out you are a śramaṇa of doctrinal studies.' He drove him out with his staff."
The Master said, "Just as sounds, footprints, and trails are nonexistent, where can the hunting dog seek and pursue? Could it be that by cutting off sounds, footprints, and trails one sees Huangbo? Virtuous practitioners of Chan, if you want to be clear about the dynamic of trapping a tiger, you too must be a patch-robed monk of the fundamental allotment."
