1.77

上堂，因僧送拄杖上師，師拈起成頌云：「清峻孤根別有靈，勢含山水自分明，提來勝得豐城劍，報盡人間兩不平。」復云：「大凡以平報不平，是義烈常準；以不平報不平。為格外清規。亦猶以智遣惑，頗蓬下士；以智遣智，罕遇作家。要會兩不平麼？諸人也沒量罪過，雪竇也沒量罪過，雪竇過自能檢責，爾者漆桶，不打更待幾時。」以拄杖一時趁下。

Ascending the hall, because a monk presented a staff to the Master, the Master took it up and composed a verse, saying: / 'A pure, precipitous, solitary root possesses a distinct wondrous spirit; / Its posture containing mountains and waters naturally stands distinct and clear. / Bringing it forth surpasses the sword of Fengcheng, / Avenging fully all two-sided injustices in the human world.' / He further said, "In general, avenging injustice with fairness is the ordinary standard of righteous valor; avenging injustice with injustice is the pure regulation outside the norm. It is also like dispelling delusion with wisdom, which is quite common among lesser fellows; dispelling wisdom with wisdom is rarely encountered even among masters of the craft. Do you wish to understand the two injustices? You people also have immeasurable transgressions; Xuedou also has immeasurable transgressions. Xuedou's transgressions he can examine and reprimand himself; as for you lacquer buckets, if I do not strike you, what more time are you waiting for?" With the staff, he drove them down all at once.
