1.81

上堂，僧問：「如何是觸目菩提？」師云：「風動塵起，鳥飛落毛。」進云：「乞師再垂方便。」師云：「洎被打破蔡州。」問：「如何是教外別傳一句？」師云：「好問。」進云：「還許學人領會也無？」師云：「有頭無漢。」師乃云：「諸仁者！夫宗師唱道，譬若滄溟上客獨泛蘭舟，月渚烟波隨情放曠，欲拋香餌須待長鯨，縱有纖鱗應無希冀。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is bodhi meeting the eye?" The Master said, "The wind stirs, dust rises; a bird flies, feathers fall." He further asked, "We beg the master to bestow upāya once again." The Master said, "Nearly having Caizhou broken through." He asked, "What is the single phrase of the separate transmission outside the teachings?" The Master said, "A good question." He further asked, "Does the master still permit the student to comprehend it or not?" The Master said, "Having a head but no fellow." The Master then said, "Good people! When a master of our lineage proclaims the path, it is like a guest atop the dark ocean drifting alone in an orchid boat; amidst the moonlit islet and misty waves, giving free rein to his feelings as he pleases. If one wishes to cast the fragrant bait, one must await the great whale; even if there are tiny scales, they should have no hope."
