1.83

上堂，僧問：「達磨西來單傳心印，諸方為什麼各說異端？」師云：「誰？」進云：「爭奈即今何？」師云：「西天令嚴。」進云：「與麼則入水見長人。」師云：「韓信臨朝底。」問：「三通鼓罷群賢集，請師拋下御前題。」師云：「長因送人處，憶得別家時。」進云：「與麼則退身三步。」師云：「依舊漁翁把釣竿。」問：「不除妄想不求真底，是什麼人？」師云：「一宿覺。」進云：「與麼則天上天下唯我獨尊。」師云：「一撥便轉。」師乃云：「大凡出眾切磋，也須是本分禪客，若未具啐啄同時眼，卒摸𢱢不著。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Bodhidharma came from the West transmitting only the mind-seal; why do the various quarters each speak of strange deviations?" The Master said, "Who?" He further asked, "What can be done about right now?" The Master said, "The order of the Western Heavens is strict." He further asked, "If so, then entering the water one sees a tall person." The Master said, "Han Xin approaching the court." He asked, "The three rounds of the drum having ceased, the multitude of worthies has gathered; we request the master to cast down the theme set before the emperor." The Master said, "Constantly, at the place of seeing people off, I recall the time of leaving home." He further asked, "If so, then stepping back three paces." The Master said, "As before, the old fisherman holds his fishing rod." He asked, "What kind of person is one who does not eliminate delusive thoughts and does not seek reality?" The Master said, "The One-Night-Awakened." He further asked, "If so, then 'In the heavens above and beneath the heavens, I alone am the most honored.'" The Master said, "Turning as soon as provoked." The Master then said, "In general, when coming out before the assembly to cut and polish, one must also be a true patch-robed monk of one's own lot; if one does not yet possess the eye of pecking and tapping simultaneously, one will never grope it out."
