2.24

When the master arrived at Lake Tai, Inspector Yu invited the master and Senior Monk Zhiyi to a vegetarian meal. As they were about to rise, the inspector asked, "What retribution does a humble official obtain from providing a meal to two patch-robed monks today?" The master said, "Coveting a single grain of his rice, you lose half a year's provisions." Zhiyi said, "Only upon leaving does one realize the host's generosity." The master called out to the inspector, and when the inspector looked up, the master pointed at Zhiyi and said, "A root-bound patch-robed monk—what benefit is there in offering him a meal?" The inspector laughed heartily, and the master got up and left.
