2.28

師在明州，看曾學士，坐次，士問：「曾與清長老商量趙州勘破婆子話，端的有勘破處麼？」師云：「清長老道箇甚麼？」士云：「又與麼去也。」師云：「清長老且放過一著。學士還知天下衲僧出者婆子綣䙡不得麼？」士云：「者裏別有箇道處，趙州若不勘破婆子，一生受屈。」師云：「勘破了也。」

When the master was in Mingzhou, he went to visit Academician Zeng. While seated, the academician asked, "I once discussed the story of Zhaozhou seeing through the old woman with Elder Qing: did he truly have a point where he saw through her?" The master said, "What did Elder Qing say?" The academician said, "It went like that again." The master said, "Elder Qing let it pass for the moment. Academician, do you know that the patch-robed monks of the world cannot escape this old woman's wicker basket?" The academician said, "Here there is another thing to say: if Zhaozhou had not seen through the old woman, he would have suffered an injustice his entire life." The master said, "He saw through her."
