2.79

上堂舉：「僧問趙州：『至道無難唯嫌揀擇，是時人窠窟否？』州云：『曾有人問我，直得五年分疎不下。』」師云：「識語不能，轉死却了也。好與二十棒者，棒須有分付處。爾若辯不出，且放此話大行。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou: '"The Great Way is not difficult; it only abhors picking and choosing"—is this the nest of contemporary people?' Zhaozhou said: 'Once someone asked me, and for fully five years I could not explain it away.'" The Master said: "Knowing words yet unable to turn them is to die completely. A good twenty blows of the stick would do—yet with this stick, there must be a place to deliver it! If you cannot discern it, for now let this talk circulate widely."
