2.94

舉：「雲門與長慶在雪峯日，因舉石鞏見僧便云：『看箭。』三平到，遂擘開胸，鞏云：『三十年一張弓、兩下箭，只射得半箇聖人。』雲門問長慶：『作麼生道免得石鞏喚作半箇聖人？』慶云：『若不還價，爭辯真偽。』雲門云：『入水始知有長人。』」師云：「石鞏要先拗折不難，爭奈三平中的了也。然則老宿要活三平，且未免張弓架箭。」

He cited: "When Yunmen and Changqing were at Xuefeng, they brought up that Shigong, whenever he saw a monk, would say: 'Watch the arrow!' When Sanping arrived, he pulled open his chest. Shigong said: 'For thirty years, one bow and two arrows, yet I have only shot half a sage.' Yunmen asked Changqing: 'What should be said to avoid being called half a sage by Shigong?' Changqing said: 'If you do not bargain the price, how can you discern the real from the false?' Yunmen said: 'Only when entering the water does one know there is a tall man.'" The Master said: "For Shigong to break it first would not have been difficult, but what could be done about Sanping hitting the mark? Nevertheless, though the old elder wanted to bring Sanping to life, he still could not avoid drawing the bow and notching the arrow."
