舉：「永嘉大師到六祖，繞禪床三匝，振錫一下，卓然而立，祖云：『夫沙門具三千威儀八萬細行，大德從何方而來，生大我慢？』」師便喝，乃云：「當時若下得者一喝，免見龍頭蛇尾。」又再舉：「繞禪床三匝振錫一下卓然而立。」代祖師云：「未到曹溪，與爾三十棒了也。」

He brought up: "Great Master Yongjia arrived at the Sixth Patriarch's place. He walked around the meditation bed three times, shook his khakkhara once, and stood upright. The Patriarch said: 'A śramaṇa is endowed with three thousand dignified manners and eighty thousand subtle conducts; from where has the Great Worthy come, giving rise to such great arrogance?'" The Master then gave a shout and said: "If he had delivered this shout at that time, he would have avoided showing a dragon's head and a snake's tail." Again he brought up: "'He walked around the meditation bed three times, shook his khakkhara once, and stood upright.'" On behalf of the Patriarch, he said: "Before you arrived at Caoxi, you had already been given thirty blows of the stick!"
