3.77

舉：「僧問巴陵：『祖意教意同別？』陵云：『雞寒上樹，鴨寒下水。』僧問睦州：『祖意教意同別？』州云：『青山自青山，白雲自白雲。』」師云：「問既一般，答亦相似，其中有利他自利、瞞人自瞞。若撿點分明，管取解空第一。」

[The Master] cited: "A monk asked Baling, 'Are the Patriarch's intent and the intent of the teachings the same or different?' Baling said, 'When cold, the chicken goes up a tree; when cold, the duck goes into the water.' A monk asked Muzhou, 'Are the Patriarch's intent and the intent of the teachings the same or different?' Muzhou said, 'The green mountain is of itself the green mountain; the white cloud is of itself the white cloud.'" The Master said, "The questions were the same, and the answers were also similar. Within them, there is benefiting others and benefiting oneself, deceiving others and deceiving oneself. If examined clearly, one is guaranteed to be foremost in understanding emptiness."
