3.88

舉：「趙州問大慈：『般若以何為體？』慈云：『般若以何為體？』州呵呵大笑。至來日州掃地次，大慈却問：『般若以何為體？』州放下掃帚呵呵大笑。」師云：「前來也笑，後來也笑，笑中有刀，大慈還識麼？直饒識得，也未免喪身失命。」

He cited: "Zhaozhou asked Daci, 'What is the substance of prajñā?' Daci said, 'What is the substance of prajñā?' Zhou gave a loud ha-ha laugh. The next day, while Zhou was sweeping the ground, Daci in turn asked, 'What is the substance of prajñā?' Zhou put down his broom and gave a loud ha-ha laugh." The Master said, "He laughed beforehand, and he laughed afterwards. There is a dagger concealed in the laugh—did Daci recognize it? Even if he did recognize it, he still could not avoid losing his body and life."
