國師問座主：「講什麼經？」云：「金剛經。」國師云：「最初是什麼字？」座主云：「如是。」國師云：「是什麼？」別云：「以拄杖便打。」

The National Teacher asked a lecture master, "What sūtra do you explain?" He said, "The Diamond Sūtra." The National Teacher said, "What are the very first characters?" The lecture master said, "'Thus [have I heard]'." The National Teacher said, "What is it?" In an alternative [the Master] said, "Just hit him with the staff."
