5.10

古有焦桐音，聽寡不在彈，古有陽春曲，和寡不在言。
言兮牙齒寒，未極離微根，彈兮歲月闌，
未盡昇沈源。少林幾坐華木落，庾嶺獨行天地寬，
因笑仲尼溫伯雪，傾蓋同途不同轍。
麟兮鳳兮安可論，許兮巢兮復何說，秋光澄澄蟾印水，
秋風蕭蕭葉初墜。送君高蹈誰不知，
如曰不知則為貴。

In antiquity there was the music of the scorched paulownia—few listened, not for lack of plucking; / In antiquity there was the song of 'Sunny Spring'—few harmonised, not for lack of words. / When speaking, the teeth grow cold, / Not having reached the root of separation and subtlety; / When plucking, the years draw to an end, / Not having exhausted the source of rising and sinking. / At Shaolin, how often he sat as flowering trees shed leaves; / On Yu Ridge walking alone, heaven and earth are broad. / Smiling at Confucius and Wenbo Xue: / Wheels side by side on the same path, yet taking different ruts. / The qilin and phoenix—how can they be discussed? / Xu You and Chaofu—what more is to be said? / Autumn light is clear and bright, the toad reflects in the water; / The autumn wind soughs, the first leaves fall. / Seeing you step loftily away, who does not know? / If they say they do not know, that is what is precious.
