In hemp robe on a straw mat, one remembers Lingche; / With one meal at peaceful leisure, there was nothing else besides. / In an instant, hundreds of years have flowed by; / Far and faint, who has come to continue what was broken? / I too belong to the careless and lazy sort, / My cold and bland body and mind harbouring generous fervour. / Having chanced to inherit the night-illuminating lamp of Lingfeng, / I promptly sailed an iron boat down into the dark ocean. / Deeply lamenting knowing exhaustion yet not knowing when to stop, / Racing through terrifying waves, tarrying in vain. / Even if one could catch the great turtle, what is there to expect? / When it is time to turn white-haired, it is fine to turn white-haired! / Now I look upon the tattered-robed Chan practitioner Xiu: / Pure and bitter as ice, and like the cork tree. / Parting from me, you take up your cane and stride into the great direction; / As leaves or as flowers, unfolding at will. / Prostrate on my pillow in solitude, my feelings grown weary, / I hastily write a wild song to present to your departing presence.
