The ancient gentleman sought the Way within himself; / When the Way and its vessels are functional, they accord with heavenly principle. / Blending with the dust, he seemed to await his time to arise; / Contemplating the forms, one knows not where they originate. / Brambles cluster together, and mugwort grows in thickets; / Filial piety and fraternal duty do not dwell in mid-stream islets. / Gathered, they should be distinct as dripping celestial dew; / Dispersed, they may coolly proclaim the scholar’s refined breeze. / Above the wind and below the wind, / Near as a finger, distant as a horse, / Autumn waters offer tranquil fellowship with limitless feeling; / Why bother with night-glowing pearls that can illuminate a carriage? / As for me, I do not claim to retain spare strength; / Singing of lofty righteousness, it arises directly from my breast. / A hundred-word Ba song inscribed upon a crag leaf, / Sent flying to an old spiritual friend of the Wang family.
