Alas, the dull and foolish / turn their backs on the original source;
with a single divergent thought, / the two faculties arise.
Victory and defeat / run like a four-horse team;
indulging in what they obtain, / they cheat and deceive themselves.
Losing the Great Way, / their shafts point north and south;
from maturity into old age, / pleased morning and dusk.
The samyaksambuddha, / honoured by humans and devas,
pulls back those who are lost / and lifts up the drowning.
The morning sun rises, / sweeping away the haze and clouds;
the thirsty obtain broth, / the cold obtain firewood.
Awakening to the reward and transformation bodies, / they know they are not real;
treading toward peace and security, / they cast off adventitious defilements.
When the Prince's uncle was born, / he broadened the Buddha's work;
crushing the six teachers, / as swift as the snap of a finger.
The Dharma came to the east, / no ordinary occasion;
the robe of faith was transmitted, / with a single sandal he departed.
Carrying Mount Wutai on his head, / a true vessel of the Dharma;
standing in accumulated snow, / severing his own arm.
Enduring what cannot be endured, / he obtained the marrow of the Dharma;
karmic debts must be paid, / yet he had descendants.
Mount Wan lay hidden, / the sun of the Buddha was eclipsed;
swiftly wandering south, / standing like dried wood.
Begging for liberation, / how formidable was his wisdom!
Dispelling bees and scorpions, / the sacred peak protected him.
At Potou Peak, / the crowd gathered like clouds;
traversing the six breaths, / pouring forth the two schools.
Teaching according to will, / he entrusted Lazy Rong;
the boy of Huangmei, / a youth on the roadside path.
Lacking the seven characteristics, / he understood all to be empty;
the sage toiled in labor, / an employee at the mortar and pestle.
Matching the verse of mind, / smashing the sharp blade of contention;
galloping south by night, / at Huai he was encountered.
The Emperor bowed his head, / gazing up from the leeward;
the boat was made new again, / the leaves returned to the thicket.
Possessing the Way, it is attained; / free of mind, it penetrates.
The world has its succession; / the four assemblies rely upon it.
The lamp continues unbroken; / the clay ocarina answers the bamboo flute.
The Master had extraordinary endowments / from his very childhood.
Of extraordinary sharpness and talent, / he trod the sacred ladder.
Parental affection firmly resisted, / unable to be carried out;
he rose up in reverence and filial piety, / fulfilling the mourning in coarse sackcloth.
Xian shaved his hair; / with Ying he questioned the meaning.
East of the Han River, / our master was found;
plucking out the eyes of the blind and deaf, / clearing the wild overgrowth.
What was once non-existent / now flows abundantly;
meeting with moistening rain, / the sprouts burst forth.
Excessive frogs croak, / the bell is not yet hung on its stand;
the fish-eye is hidden, / the bright pearl spat out.
Towering over the two mountains, / under the eaves they gathered;
coming ten thousand li, / walking on calloused feet.
Thunder roars in spring, / opening the doors of hibernating creatures;
bonds of disputation untied, / departure and remaining decided.
Pouring daigo, / ladling amṛta;
one hundred and fifty, / their lineage flourishing.
Traversing worn carriage tracks, / reciting his phrases and words;
gazing at his bones and eyes, / scroll paintings on white silk.
From as far as the Hu and Yue, / to as near as staff and sandals,
they cast aside coarse marks / and all attained awakening.
The mountain is lush and dense, / the springs murmur in the dark;
tiger tracks crisscross, / weasels and monkeys chatter.
The stupa gate is closed, / pines and cypresses entwine;
the sky droops in the south, / the ocean glimmers vast.
Carrying ragged robes in sacks, / single coverlets in book boxes,
they come to circumambulate, / prostrating with five points to the ground.
Fame exhausts the body; / official salary satiates the throat;
becoming accustomed to hatred and resentment, / taking pleasure in rotten fish.
Looking askance at the True Vehicle, / considering it an extra wart;
I rejoice in my birth, / distinguishing sweet herbs from stinkweed.
I seek his guidance, / yet he is far away with no path;
carving into the hard stone, / I pour out my sorrow.
