[The Master] cited: "A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha, 'I do not ask about what has words; I do not ask about what is wordless.' The World-Honoured One remained silent for a good while. The non-Buddhist said, 'The World-Honoured One with great loving-kindness and great compassion has opened my clouds of delusion, enabling me to attain entry.'"
The Master said, "Virtuous practitioners of Chan, since the clouds of delusion have been opened and he certainly sees the Buddha, do you still allow that he is a fellow practitioner? If there is mutual understanding, then the ancestral masters throughout the world are all companions of the non-Buddhist; if each rejects the seal of verification, then the patch-robed monks of the Eastern Land are not equal to the non-Buddhists of the Western Heavens."
