[The Master] cited: "Paishu asked Dingshan, 'Without falling into numbers and quantities, please, Master, speak.' Dingshan held up his rosary and said, 'Does it fall, or not fall?' Paishu said, 'Everyone possesses the round bead with three holes; please, Master, round off the previous words.' Dingshan immediately struck him. Paishu immediately left. Dingshan said, 'Thirty years from now, you will beat your chest and weep aloud.' Later, Paishu indeed opened a hall and instructed the assembly, saying, 'Thirty years ago, I was deceived by old man Dingshan in no small measure.'"
The Master said, "As for Dingshan's application, apply he did, but how perilous! As for Paishu's knowing, know he did, but still he had never possessed the eye of Dharma-selection. Try to discern it."
