One day he said: "When this great lecture hall is wide open and the sun-wheel rises in the eastern sky, there is bright radiance. At midnight on a moonless night, with clouds and fog gloomy and dark, it is dark again. Through the gaps in the doors and windows, one sees permeability again; between the walls and eaves, one observes obstruction again. In places of differentiation, one sees conditions again; in dull emptiness, the empty nature pervades everywhere. In dense, smouldering signs, murky dust curls up; when clear skies disperse the vapor, one again observes purity. Shame on old Śākyamuni—talking of returning or not returning! The ten thousand bodhisattvas in Mañjuśrī's hall cannot be found anywhere, but originally they are all right here! If a sharp fellow sees this, please snap your staff in two."
