One day he cited: "Mazu ascended the hall. As the assembly was just gathering, Baizhang came forward and rolled up the mat. Mazu then stepped down from his seat. Everywhere they all called this extraordinary. In citing it this way, does it still hit the mark? If it hits the mark, it is like a jellyfish taking shrimp for eyes. If it does not hit the mark, then to praise it in vain—what are you after? A fellow in the assembly recklessly stepped forward and asked, 'What was the ancient's intention?' Furthermore, there are old fellows who cannot tell good from bad, who answer, 'I took you for a fellow traveler of sūtra-peddlers,' and also say, 'Come before the seat again tomorrow.' How bitter! How bitter! Calling themselves masters of the school like this, wishing to open the eyes of humans and devas—wait until the year of the donkey! Elders! If Xuedou had seen him come out at that time to roll up the mat, I would have kicked him right in the chest, so that both the one sitting and the one fallen could not get up at all, so that people of later times might have a different livelihood and avoid mutually dulling each other. Wouldn't each of them be an outstanding fellow? Do you understand? Return to the hall."
