Ascending the hall, the Master said, “The character yǐ (以) does not make the character bā (八); it is not the udumbara blossom in full bloom—smelling it, there is no fragrance. On the contrary, laugh at the traveler in the fishing boat who does not love the Southern Mountain but loves the turtle-nosed snake.” A monk asked, “Extending a question when there are no clouds for ten thousand miles, what is the meaning of being struck with the stick under the blue sky?” The Master said, “The army moves with the seal.” The monk said, “If so, then it is in the Upādhyāya’s hands.” The Master said, “A sharp sword does not cut down a dead fellow.”
