He cited: "An ancient said, 'Sand cannot be put into the eye; water cannot be put into the ear.' If suddenly there were a fellow who had full faith, held firm, and could not be deceived by others—what clattering of hot bowls are the teachings of the Buddhas and Patriarchs? Let him hang high his bowl-bag, break his staff in two, and surely he will be a person of the Way of no-affairs." He also said, "'Mount Sumeru can be put into the eye; the great ocean's water can be put into the ear.' Another sort of fellow accepts people's deliberation over the teachings of the Buddhas and Patriarchs—like a dragon gaining water, like a tiger leaning against a mountain; then he must hoist up his bowl-bag and carry his staff horizontally, and he too is a person of the Way of no-affairs." He said further, "Being so will not do, not being so will not do, and then there is no connection whatsoever. Among these three persons of the Way of no-affairs, one must be chosen to be the master."
