He cited: "A monk asked Jingqing, 'This student has not yet reached the source; I beg the Master for an upāya.' Qing said, 'What source is it?' [The monk] said, 'The source.' Qing said, 'If it is the source, how could it receive an upāya?'" The Master said, "Steeped in dead water, what use is it? The attendant asked, 'Did you just now strip him of his clothes?' Qing said, 'No.' The attendant said, 'Did you not strip him of his clothes?' Qing said, 'No.' The attendant said, 'What was the upādhyāya's venerable meaning?' Qing said, 'A single drop of ink forms dragons in two places.'" The Master said, "That is somewhat better. It is not that Xuedou diminishes Jingqing's majestic light; I wish to meet this monk: 'What source is it?' 'The source'—thirty years later, I would give you thirty blows of the stick!"
