He cited: "A monk asked Great Master Yunmen for instruction regarding Xuansha's dialogue on the three kinds of sick people. Yunmen said, 'Make your prostrations.' When the monk finished prostrating and stood up, Yunmen thrust at him with his staff. The monk stepped back. Yunmen said, 'You do not suffer from blindness.' He called him forward again; the monk stepped forward. Yunmen said, 'You do not suffer from deafness.' He then said, 'Do you understand?' The monk said, 'I do not understand.' Yunmen said, 'You do not suffer from muteness.' At this, the monk had an awakening." The Master then gave a shout and said, "This blind, deaf, and mute fellow—had it not been for Yunmen, he would have had to wait until the year of the donkey! Nowadays, there are those who pay no heed even when one raises the mallet or erects the whisk, and when told to step forward, they do not come. Do you understand? Can the other quarters do nothing with you? If Xuedou does not do anything with you, what are you bunch of donkeys good for?" Using his staff, he drove them all away at once.
