He cited: "Gushan instructed the assembly, saying, 'If we discuss this matter, it is like a single sword.' At that time a monk asked, 'I have received the Upādhyāya's words: "If we discuss this matter, it is like a single sword." The Upādhyāya is a dead corpse; the student is a dead corpse. What is the sword?' Gushan said, 'Drag out this dead corpse.' The monk assented, returned to his robes and bowl, packed up his luggage, and left. In the evening, Gushan asked the head monk, 'Is the monk who asked the question still here?' The head monk said, 'He left immediately at that time.' Gushan said, 'He deserves twenty blows of the stick.'" The Master said, "The veteran masters of the various quarters all say that Gushan lost an eye; they little know that under heavy reward there must be brave men. Even so, if closely scrutinized, inevitably both are buried at once."
