3.58

He cited: "While Yangshan was sitting, Dachanfo arrived, lifted one foot, and said, 'The twenty-eight patriarchs of the Western Heavens were also like this; the six patriarchs of the Tang land were also like this; the Upādhyāya is also like this; I am also like this.' Yangshan came down from the meditation seat and struck him with four blows of the rattan rod." The Master said, "Before the rattan rod broke, why did he give only four blows? One must be a fellow who cuts through nails and shears through iron to carry it off. Later Dachan arrived at Huoshan and said of himself, 'Under Jiyun Peak, four rattan rods—the great Dachanfo of the realm paid homage.' Huoshan said, 'Strike the bell!' Dachan immediately ran away." The Master said, "Though this fellow saw the opportunity and transformed, what could be done when he had a head but no tail?"
