He cited: "Beneath Mount Nanquan there was a hermit. An itinerant monk passed by and said to the hermit, 'Recently Upādhyāya Nanquan has appeared in the world; why not go pay homage?' The hermit said, 'Not only Nanquan—even if a thousand Buddhas arose, I still could not go.' When Nanquan heard this, he ordered Zhaozhou to go inspect him. When Zhaozhou saw him, he paid homage; the hermit paid no attention. Zhaozhou crossed from west to east; the hermit still paid no attention. Zhaozhou crossed again from east to west; the hermit still paid no attention. Zhaozhou said, 'The grass-bandits have suffered a great defeat!' He pulled down the screen and left. Returning, he related it to Nanquan. Nanquan said, 'I have always suspected this fellow.'" The Master said, "Great and small Nanquan and Zhaozhou were seen through by a fellow carrying a board!"
